This body of work was inspired by “Invisible Cities”, in this book, Italo Calvino, writes short stories in which Marco Polo describes to Kublai Khan all the cities in his empire, some we think are real, and others we know are imagined. He writes of one place that is encountered during the day, where work is never ceasing. Marco Polo cannot understand where the plans are for all this building activity. When he asks the citizens, they say, wait until sunset, we will explain then. Sun goes down and the stars come out, looking up and pointing to the night sky, they say, “There are the blueprints.” I thought of this story of Calvino’s and of the visible and invisible, the imagined and referential.
